Ingredients You Need

  • Cream cheese: Best softened at room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Sour cream: Cheaper, easier to find, and less processed than high-quality mayonnaise. But you can also use Greek yogurt or olive oil-based mayonnaise.
  • Cheddar cheese: Go for freshly shredded because it melts more smoothly and has a purer flavor than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Bacon: Cooked and crumbled; the easiest way to cook bacon is in the oven, but stovetop bacon works too. Even store-bought bacon bits can do the job, but check the ingredient list to ensure all ingredients are keto-friendly, if that’s important to you. White Oak Pastures sells high-quality bacon, which I recommend if you’re shopping online.
  • Ranch seasoning: Dried parsley, dried dill weed, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt and pepper. I buy organic dried herbs in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs and make a DIY blend, but you can also buy one Ranch seasoning mix or Ranch dressing mix packet.
  • Green onions: Although optional, chopped green onions are great as garnish. Corn works great, too.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Follow these simple directions, and you can’t go wrong! This easy appetizer comes together in a few minutes.

One of the fun benefits of this crack dip recipe is that it can be enjoyed cold or warm. Double the recipe and chill the first batch, then pop the other in the oven for a few minutes before serving. Let’s get started!

Cold Crack Dip

  1. Mix the cream cheese and sour cream in a large mixing bowl. Stir by hand or use a hand mixer. Add salt, pepper, and seasonings. Taste and adjust as desired.
  2. Fold in the shredded cheese and cooked bacon. Reserve a small portion of each for garnish.
  3. Top with remaining cheese and bacon. Optionally, garnish with chopped green onion. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready.

Warm Crack Dip

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F, then follow the cold dip instructions above for steps 1 and 2.
  2. Transfer the dip mixture to a 2-quart casserole dish and cover it with foil. Bake for 15 minutes until hot and bubbly.
  3. Top with remaining cheese and bacon, then garnish with green onions. Serve hot and enjoy.

Substitutions and Variations

My crack dip recipe is similar to a keto million-dollar dip, but better because it’s completely nut-free. And since I use sour cream instead of mayonnaise, the recipe is egg-free, too.

In its original form, this delicious dip recipe is already keto, carnivore keto, low oxalate, and GAPS compliant. If you are on strict GAPS, ensure your bacon is nitrate-free. Unfortunately, with sour cream and two types of cheese, this dip is not Whole30 and Paleo-friendly.

This family-friendly dip is delicious as written in the recipe card below, but you can switch things up to give a different flavor profile. Think of it as your culinary canvas and try these simple swaps to make it uniquely yours:

  • Cheese substitutes: Use smoked cheddar cheese for a smoky flavor, or combine a strong-flavored cheese like sharp cheddar cheese and a milder one like mozzarella. For a briny-tangy spin, add a touch of blue cheese.
  • Protein-packed dip: Make a keto dip with sausage by browning the sausage before mixing it in. Or add cooked shredded chicken for a keto crack chicken dip. This is best served warm.
  • Substitute sour cream and Ranch seasoning by using 8 ounces of homemade keto Ranch dressing instead.
  • Flavor boosters: Run out of green onions? Try it with chopped chives or a little bit of leek. If you want to give this cream cheese dip some heat, add a little bit of cayenne pepper or chili powder.
  • Spices: Add some heat by sprinkling red pepper flakes, cayenne, or chopped jalapeños.

Expert Tips

  • Taste and adjust: Mix all the ingredients thoroughly for an even distribution of flavors and adjust the seasoning to your preference.
  • Freshly shredded cheese: Instead of buying pre-shredded, shred the cheese yourself to avoid additives and for a smoother, creamier melt when warmed up.
  • Room-temp cream cheese: For an even smoother mixture, it helps that your cream cheese comes at room temperature before making the dip. Pull it out of the fridge and place it on the counter for about 30 minutes before mixing with the other ingredients.
  • Crispy bacon: Grab pre-cooked bacon from the store if you’re short on time. For the best crunchy texture, use real bacon bits or freshly cooked bacon then crumble it finely.

How to Store This Recipe

A crack dip can be made a day or two ahead, but it’s best enjoyed fresh or within the first 24 hours. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container for 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

I don’t recommend freezing this dip, as the ingredients tend to separate and it won’t taste as good. When ready to eat, warm it in the oven at 350 F. You can also enjoy this keto dip cold.

What to Serve with Ranch Crack Dip

One of the beauties of this crack dip recipe is that it’s incredibly versatile. You can pair It with just about anything.

One way to enjoy this easy dip recipe is with my homemade flax crackers. Cheese chips and pork rinds are great options, too.  It’s equally delicious with toasted baguettes, crostini, and potato chips.

Keep the carbs low and serve the dip with some vegetables like broccoli, celery sticks, carrot stick, cucumber slices, and bell pepper wedges. You can even stuff the dip in mushrooms for baking. The possibilities are endless!

When Halloween rolls around, be sure to set this dip up with a skeleton veggie tray.

I know it’s supposed to be a dip but it’s so delicious I enjoyed a little bowl of it all by itself, no crackers or anything.
