What is the Carnivore Diet?

A carnivore diet is a diet made of animal foods exclusively. That means we meet all our nutritional needs without vegetables and fibrous plant foods.

It is a phenomenal approach for rapid fat loss, healing autoimmune conditions, depression, anxiety, serious digestive disturbances, and more. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Read our carnivore diet success stories, and you’ll see the results speak for themselves.

No one has to follow a strict carnivorous approach for the rest of their life if they don’t want to. Periods of carnivory can be beneficial as quick health resets to help you learn which foods are optimal for you and which may be causing more harm than good.

Our post What to Eat on a Carnivore Diet breaks down the variety of foods available from the animal kingdom. You might be surprised to know that most people don’t feel any restriction or lack of variety once they get in the groove of carnivore cooking.

It takes time and practice, of course. Our Carnivore Diet Food List will help you out when you first begin.

Desserts on Carnivore Diet?

Carnivore dieters eat a lot of red meat, eggs, fish, chicken, pork, and organ meats

What do carnivores eat for dessert?

Honestly, most of them don’t eat any dessert. Others might have a spoonful of raw heavy cream or a glass of raw milk when they want a treat.

Oddly, no one seems to miss sweet recipes too much. It’s rarely a reason for people to stop the diet.

Over time, our taste buds adjust, and more often than not, the obvious benefits of carnivory outweigh any hankerings for sugar. Fatty animal meat and fat are incredibly satiating. It’s quite an eye-opening experience to fuel on these foods exclusively.

Cake, even carnivore cake, shouldn’t be eaten every day, but once in a while (probably) won’t hurt your progress. When a special occasion comes along and makes you wish for a carnivore friendly dessert, try this one!

The recipe below is a great carnivore birthday cake or special recipe for any occasion. Continue browsing through all my carnivore diet dessert recipes for even more ideas!

Easy Carnivore Cake Recipe

Have you noticed all carnivore diet recipes are ridiculously easy? That’s just one of the benefits of carnivore-style cooking.

This animal based dessert calls for 5 ingredients and 10 minutes of prep work. Think you can handle that? Here’s how to whip up this tasty dessert after a nice carnivore dinner.

What you need:

  • Eggs
  • Sweetener, optional
  • Vanilla extract, optional
  • Whole milk, raw if possible
  • Butter

Gather the ingredients and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Beat eggs on high in a large bowl for up to 5 minutes, until thickened.

Gradually add the sweetener, continue mixing until light and fluffy. Mix in vanilla.

In a small saucepan, heat milk and butter for about 2 minutes over medium heat, just until butter melts.

Slowly add to eggs, beat until combined.

A square glass containing cake batter.

Pour unit a greased 8×8-inch (20×20-cm) baking dish. Bake for 40 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool before serving.

All this beating creates a light and fluffy cake. The texture reminds me of sponge cake while the flavor is similar to flan.

With only 5 ingredients, this carnivore cake certainly does the job. There is no mistake, it’s a real cake! However, it’s not overly decadent or indulgent.

The recipe is undoubtedly animal based and, if made with a keto sweetener, is the perfect addition to your collection of keto carnivore recipes!

Let’s discuss more options for sweetening this almost no carb dessert.

Honey on a Carnivore Diet

Some people do well by adding honey on a carnivore diet.

Carbs are not inherently bad; they are a tool for use in the proper context. Consider your priorities and goals; make the choice that is right for you.

Honey is great food with many nutritional benefits (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) and valuable when used appropriately. Per tablespoon (21 g) of honey, there are 17 g carbohydrate, 3.5 g water, 0 g protein, and 0 g fat. (11)

White Oak Pastures has incredible wildflower honey, so add that to your cart next time you order grass-fed, regenerative meats online!

Suppose this is a baffling topic, and you want some help making a nutrition plan and learning when and how to add carnivore carbs like honey and raw milk. Keto Carnivore & Strict Carnivore Options

You might want fat loss or body composition improvements and don’t need to gain weight on a carnivore diet. In this case, opt for a keto sweetener instead of honey.

Strict carnivore dieters may find the combination of eggs, milk, and butter to be satisfying enough or want to add just the vanilla extract for a bit of additional flavor.

I love My Sweet Keto’s savory Carnivore Cake. Not only is it beautiful but also a great way to celebrate with something special while not involving any sweet flavors. If you’re not ready to experiment with honey or a keto sweetener and like savory recipes, try her idea instead!

Mine came out wet, more like a flan. No cake texture… doesn’t look like online photo. Tasty, but a custard texture.

  2. Just tried it and loved it. Just curious if it’s supposed to be a bit watery. Definitely turned out more flan like.

  3. Hello! Thank you for all the recipes! I’m putting together a Valentine dinner for my husband with your recipes! I’m wondering if could substitute the milk with the Rebel milk to reduce the net carb count. Thoughts?

Thank you for this recipe. My young child really wants an unsweetened cake for her birthday. Unfortunately, I don’t have an electric mixer or enough time to get one. I will try whisking the whites by hand until they are stiff (using the loop balloon whisk method) and folding them into the yolks so it will be less flat which is what happened the first time I made it. The flavour was tasty though.

    1. Yes, the electric mixer really helps with texture (and time). But, if you are able to get those whites nice and fluffy and stiff it will help immensely.

Thank you very much for replying to me with a great answer. I didn’t have time to check your response before making the cake last night. I thought about the egg white folding idea from another low carb cake recipe. What I learned is this recipe has a bit of flexibility and I really like that. Because I buy farm eggs that aren’t always large, I used 1 large, 4 medium eggs and 2 little ones. Then I followed your instructions without an electric mixer. I just whisked fast with the balloon whisk until it looked frothy like your picture. The only other differences were that I used a 9″ round glass cake pan and I reduced the temp to 325. I read that it’s recommended to reduce the temperature when using a glass pan because glass retains heat longer. However, it just looks lighter in colour than your photo. Next time I’ll try 350F. I also did the toothpick check at 35 min and it was done. Every oven is different. My little girl was thrilled to have a birthday cake as she’s never had one before. We put a dollop of clotted cream on top and it was tasty. Thank you for the super recipe. I really like your photos and instructions too.

      2. The pleasure is mine, Jess. Thanks so much for your message! It made my day. I love hearing that one of my recipes had such a positive influence on your daughter’s day!

    1. Blueberries and berries in general have a low carb count, so you could add them according to your diet. I’m sure your guests will enjoy them!

It’s more like flan consistency. Tastes good. I added half a Tsp of pure monk fruit. Next time, I would use heavy whipping cream instead of milk to reduce the carbs.

Absolutely delicious! I omit sweetener and add honey to the top when cooled. I was worried because the mixture nearly reached the top of the pan..but it doesn’t rise, so don’t fret. Absolutely loved it!! Thank you!!

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with the cake recipe, Kaylin. Glad you stuck with it and loved the outcome.

  7. I can’t rate it because I haven’t made it. I was just wondering where are all of the carbs coming from. Thanks

    1. Hi Jaime, Sure, you can give hand whisking a try. Keep at it until the eggs are frothy. The goal is to whip as much air into the eggs as you can, so the cake bakes into a light and spongy texture.

  8. I have made this recipe a couple times, and the consistency is more of a custard than a cake. Still very much enjoyable! My first attempt there was a thin cake-like crust and custard/flan-like bottom layer. My second attempt I frothed the egg whites to very stiff meringue, then folded the heated milk and eggs. I would describe it as a flat/deconstructed creme puff cake – the top layer was bread like and the bottom layer was more custardy. I want try making a custard first with the raw milk, butter, egg yolk – refrigerating until thick, then fold the chilled custard with the frothed egg whites. I think this will help distribute that bread like texture throughout the cake. I will report back!

    1. I love hearing about your culinary adventures, Sarah! Thank you for sharing so much with us. I’m sure this will inspire others also. Please do report back. I look forward to hearing your update.

Thank you for offering a dairy free option for the milk. What would you suggest for a replacement for butter? My daughter has a
GI condition and can’t have any dairy of any kind and now low fat. Her medical specialist suggested the Carnivore diet minus the dairy and moderating her fat. Your web site was top of the list. Again thank you.

    1. Hi Sarah, I recommend coconut oil instead of butter as a dairy-free alternative. I hope your daughter gets the relief she is looking for by eating more animal foods and less fiber!

    2. Maybe try coconut oil. It would be a supper coconut cake. Or maybe coconut cream to replace the liquid and fat

  10. Blending eggs on high in my vitamix generates almost enough heat to cook them. I stopped after a couple minutes because the canister was so hot, but maybe precooking them was the idea? Wondering if I should have blended them the full 5 minutes.
Will see how it turns out. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. Hi Melissa, Hopefully the cake came out nicely! The step refers to blending with an electric hand mixer but only until they thicken a little. So however you convert that best to a vitamix is all you need. Doesn’t have to be for a full 5 mins if you finish before. Eggs will cook in the oven, you don’t need to precook.

    I modified this a bit

Added isopure protein powder and 1tsp of baking soda

Turned this into waffles topped with the honey and yes its so so good

  12. Thank you very much for the recipe! I made it twice, and i managed to turn it into pudding, instead of cake. It was still good though. Do you have a more specific instruction on how many eggs and how much milk and butter?
