Is Eggnog Keto?
This easy eggnog recipe is keto friendly and low carb so you can enjoy some holiday cheer on your keto diet and stay in ketosis.
I recommend you read my post on the 8 Symptoms of Ketosis if you have any doubts as to whether or not youโre in a ketotic state.
Each serving of keto eggnog has 2 g net carbohydrates and lots of healthy fats which makes it a very filling and rich drink! One small cup is all you need.
Itโs important to keep in mind that not all eggnog is created equal.
A more appropriate question to as is โIs store bought eggnog keto?โ
There is a stark contrast between a recipe made from scratch and store bought brands of eggnog which are packed with sugar. These are not keto friendly.
Read the nutrition label before you buy a carton of eggnog from the store. Some brands hide unexpected ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, sugar, corn syrup, natural and artificial flavor, carrageenan, and other unpleasant food-like ingredients.
Plus, they use reduced-fat milk so you donโt even get healthy fats from the cream.
Low Carb Eggnog Recipe
Make-ahead recipes are big time savers for this time of year. When we are busy with all the holiday excitement, tried and true keto recipes are one of my 5 ways to stick to a keto diet.

The key to making this a low carb eggnog is using a keto sweetener instead of refined sugar. I choose Lakanto Classic which is a blend of erythritol and monk fruit.
If ยฝ cup of sweetener sounds like a lot to you, feel free to decrease the amount down to just ยผ cup.
You can order Lakanto Classic here and use my coupon code PRIMALEDGEHEALTH in the checkout to save 20% off!
If you like this recipe I know you will also enjoy Keto Eggnog Cheesecake Pudding! It has all the classic eggnog flavors but is creamy like cheesecake and sets up like pudding.
In addition to being keto approved, this winter drink is almost exclusively from animal-based ingredients which makes this homemade eggnog an option for those interested in a carnivore diet and carnivore diet recipes. I included it in my collection of carnivore diet desserts because it’s so tasty!
If youโre on a modified carnivore diet, this keto carnivore recipe is a great choice.
There are also no offensively high oxalate ingredients here. So you can enjoy this drink on a low oxalate diet too.
How to Make Keto Eggnog Recipe
It is possible to make a no-cook version of this recipe by simply blending all the ingredients in blender and serving chilled or with ice.
That is a quick 5-minute prep method that has zero fuss about it.
You can also make a Low-Carb Eggnog Shake.
However, the no-cook method doesnโt produce a luscious and thick custard-like texture and I find it doesnโt save as well as when I cook the recipe on the stove-top.
Making a thick and creamy custard base is really the key to perfecting this keto eggnog recipe.
Whisk all the ingredients (except the bourbon) in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Warm the liquid slowly and continue stirring until it thickens enough to coat the back of the spoon. This can take up to 15 minutes.
If you have a cooking thermometer, use it and wait until it reaches 160-165 degrees F (70-75 degrees C). Do not allow to boil.
You want the eggs to cook slowly into a custard and not curdle into scrambled eggs.
Now cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill for at least 4 hours in the fridge.
Just before serving, add 1 ounce of bourbon to each glass and stir gently. Sprinkle with grated nutmeg, if desired.
The recipe will store for up to 2-3 days.
Non Alcoholic Eggnog Recipe
Treat yourself and any lucky house guests to a delicious keto Christmas cocktail or mocktail!
Serve this homemade eggnog without alcohol or with a splash of bourbon.
There are a lot of variations you can make to this eggnog.
- Serve warm, right after making it
- Serve chilled, as is traditionally done
- Spike it with alcohol
- Keep it alcohol free
I like it best after resting overnight and chilled but you can also drink it warm right after making it.
Itโs so good, even our children drank some with me, without the bourbon of course.
I love being able to share nourishing foods with them. I can see how they thrive with a diet high in healthy fats and animal foods.
A word of caution if you do add alcohol. You can drink alcohol on a keto diet, but know that it metabolizes quickly so donโt be surprised if one drink feels like two or three used to before you got keto adapted.
The recipes calls for 8 ounces of bourbon which gives 1 ounce alcohol per serving. Feel free to adjust the amount to your liking. You could start with 4 ounces, go up to 12, or just pour to taste.
Bourbon may be replaced with dark rum if you prefer. Take a look at this comparison of whiskey, rum, and brandy to decide which alcohol is best in eggnog.
To make an alcohol free eggnog recipe, just omit it. You donโt need to change anything else.
